A shopper may know the outcome they want—a waterproof trail shoe within a budget—but not the exact product, variant, seller or current offer. A conversational assistant can clarify that need, compare products and manage an order. It still needs authoritative catalogue, inventory, payment and service records before a helpful conversation becomes a consequential transaction.
What Alibaba launched in China
On 11 May 2026, Alibaba said Qwen App had been connected to the whole Taobao and Tmall catalogue, described as more than 4 billion products, and that Qwen Shopping Assistant had launched in the Taobao App. The flow covers conversational discovery, comparison, ordering and delivery management, replacing an earlier phase limited to a handful of trial categories. This is evidence of a named deployment; the 4-billion figure is a company-supplied catalogue or listing scope, not a count of active stock, participating merchants, eligible offers or successful orders. 1
The rollout was staged. Alibaba’s January China public test covered conversational discovery in selected categories, with users continuing to Taobao to buy. It reported an on-stage demonstration in which Qwen ordered, paid for and received 40 cups of bubble tea through Taobao Instant Commerce, and said Qwen App had exceeded 100 million monthly active users within two months of its 17 November public beta. These are not a catalogue-order experiment, shopping cohort, conversion baseline or merchant result. 2
From product search to callable commerce skills
Alibaba says Qwen can ask follow-up questions about budget and style, use order history for recommendations, draw on Taobao’s catalogue and billions of reviews, and match products from an image, video or social-post link. It also describes photo-based apparel virtual try-on; some footwear, accessories and Qwen-App extensions were future rollouts, not universally available features. 1 6
Jiemian reported that Taobao search, order fulfilment and after-sales capabilities had been encapsulated as callable “Skills” and jointly built by the Taobao/Tmall and Qwen teams. That reported architecture explains how the assistant could retain order and service state rather than merely produce product links. The public material does not disclose the application programming interfaces, schema coverage, tool-success rate, latency, fallback behaviour or safeguards against stale product state. 5
Natural-language interpretation, recommendations, comparison, image matching and try-on are AI assistance. Order management, logistics and after-sales are agentic actions claimed for the deployed flow. A price-and-stock-triggered purchase is narrower automation: the shopper selects the product, variant and budget, then Taobao monitors the condition and submits the order when it is met. 1 3
Authority is narrower than autonomy
Taobao says each delegated purchase uses one instruction and one authorization, a task-specific token that expires after success or failure, facial-biometric or password authentication, and a single-task limit of RMB 1,000. These controls bind a target and trigger to limited authority. They do not establish that ordinary conversational orders use the same consent flow or cap, and no cancellation, substitution, refund or disputed-execution policy is disclosed. Its web price-comparison claim is not an audited best-price result: no search universe, matching rule, freshness measure or price-error rate is provided. 3
What the evidence does not show
The buyer-side connection is broad on paper—catalogue, reviews, order history, promotions, payment and order, logistics and after-sales tools. Merchant-side governance is less visible. No named seller outcome, eligibility or opt-out policy, correction route, ranking rule, agent-order attribution, sales result or return result was disclosed. Alibaba’s adjacent Dianxiaomi merchant-service investment is not evidence that sellers use or control the Qwen catalogue assistant. 1
TMTPost reported one launch-day hands-on experience combining recommendation, selection, one-click ordering/payment, logistics lookup and after-sales, with screenshots, but no reproducible test or payment verification. Jiemian reported that specific AI-shopping usage and conversion data had not been released as of 13 May. There is therefore no disclosed completed-order rate, conversion lift, price saving, recommendation accuracy, return rate, merchant revenue impact or external field evaluation for the May deployment. 5 7
An illustrative governed test
For a distributor or retailer, this is an illustrative application, not a reported result. Start with one product family and give the assistant canonical product and variant identifiers, structured attributes, seller identity, current price and stock timestamps, delivery promise and return terms. Let source-of-record systems decide availability and what may be ordered; record the selected seller, authority, expiry and receipt.
Replay queries with near-identical variants, accessories, stale stock and conflicting attributes. Measure correct retrieval, unsupported-claim rate, freshness, clarification rate and review time. Only then test a narrowly authorised purchase flow with explicit limits and an owner for exceptions. Order history, reviews and try-on photos also need commerce-specific retention and deletion rules; the general App Store disclosure does not answer those questions. 8
The lesson is that catalogue retrieval, fulfilment, after-sales and payment can be exposed as stateful tools while authority remains task-scoped and revocable. This case establishes a deployment and control design, not proven commercial return or fair treatment of merchants.
