A grocery buyer may have a handwritten list, a recipe, a photograph of a product or only the contents of a fridge. Turning that messy request into the right products is useful, but it is not the same as authorising a purchase. Pick n Pay’s Penny is a live example of a retailer using conversational assistance to reduce discovery and basket-building effort while leaving the consequential commercial step with the customer.
What Penny does in production
Pick n Pay launched the Gemini-powered assistant in its South African asap! grocery-delivery app from 6 July 2026; it was live for asap! customers by the retained 23 October 2026 cutoff. Reuters and ITWeb reported the launch, and Pick n Pay later confirmed the rollout. The retailer’s description of Penny as the first fully integrated grocery AI assistant is positioning, not an independently verified market ranking. 1 3 4
Penny accepts typed requests, voice notes and images. Reported examples include handwritten lists, recipe ingredients, product photographs and fridge contents. It can recommend meals, alternatives and budget options, build a basket and use order history and Smart Shopper-linked preferences for repeat-shopping requests. These are discovery, recommendation and preparation functions rather than evidence of autonomous purchasing. 1 4 5
Pick n Pay executive Enrico Ferigolli described Gemini as operating through internal interfaces for search, order history and loyalty, with content-management context and a retrieval-augmented repository rather than direct database access. Bizcommunity similarly reports catalogue, Smart Shopper, order-history and curated-content interfaces. This is a retailer-described control pattern, not an independent technical audit. 5 7
The multilingual claim has an important qualification. Ferigolli said voice-note translation worked more easily than non-English text in testing, and African-language capability was below global-language capability. A handwritten Italian-list demonstration is not a language-specific accuracy rate: no public sample, error taxonomy, supported-language list or service level was found. 4 5
The approval boundary matters
Penny can add or delete basket items, but the customer must choose delivery, apply points, handle the card transaction and press the final-order control. Pick n Pay’s terms reinforce that the assistant’s responses may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or unsuitable, and that customers must verify descriptions, ingredients, allergens, price and availability. A basket is not an order or a reservation; store acceptance depends on availability, correct information and payment authorisation. 2 5
The same terms place payment with a third party after the customer submits an order. If stock is unavailable, the customer chooses a refund or another substitute; delivery timing is an estimate. No retained source establishes Penny authority to charge a card, reserve stock, choose substitutions, negotiate, schedule delivery or escalate to a human. The useful distinction is preparation versus commitment.
What the reported usage shows—and does not show
Retail Brief Africa reported Pick n Pay’s analysis of hundreds of thousands of Penny conversations. More than 40% were product search or discovery, nearly 20% involved recipes or meal planning, and about 15% involved budget shopping. More than one in five conversations resulted in products being added to a basket. These are retailer-reported production observations with conversations—not unique customers, paid orders or fulfilled orders—as the denominator. 6
The same report says Penny users shopped more categories and built larger baskets than the app average, but gives no exact count, interval, matched cohort, control group, basket-to-payment rate, gross merchandise value, margin or independent audit. The observation therefore indicates live use beyond novelty prompts, not causal commercial impact, conversion or return on investment. The app listing’s 30,000-plus products, 400-plus delivery destinations, 1M-plus downloads and roughly 50.7K reviews describe the wider app, not Penny adoption or performance. 8
Ferigolli also described comparing several large language models against seven or eight factors, selecting Gemini on a claimed balance of accuracy, speed and cost, and testing images with family kitchen lists. Models, prompts, datasets, samples and scores were not published, so this is internal selection work rather than a reproducible benchmark. The 32.7% FY26 online-turnover figure in Pick n Pay’s 25 May 2026 investor release predates Penny’s July launch and must not be attributed to it. 5 9 10
An illustrative bounded application
For a manufacturer or distributor selling equipment, fittings or custom components, Penny’s pattern could be adapted as an illustrative application, not a reported deployment. Let a buyer submit a photo, voice note or incomplete request. A controlled assistant could normalise the need, retrieve cited product and specification records, show compatible alternatives, and prepare a configuration or initial quote. Machine-readable identifiers, dimensions, materials, approved combinations, current availability, price rules and revision dates would be required before the draft is useful.
The technical or product owner should remain authoritative for fit, safety and approved combinations; commercial owners should confirm price, terms, capacity and delivery; the buyer should approve the final commitment. Test grounded item selection, constraint compliance, correction rate, language and modality separately, then follow the funnel from conversation to accepted quote, payment, fulfilment, substitution and repeat use. Penny supplies no evidence that autonomous checkout, payment or delivery scheduling improves outcomes.
