Fractory: CAD quoting is useful when engineering still owns the release

Fractory shows how a managed manufacturing network can shorten supplier search and coordinate custom metalwork across borders. Its strongest lesson is practical: automated quoting has a boundary, and welding, exceptions and purchase authority still require human review.

A buyer needing a custom metal part is not simply searching for a product. They must provide a drawing, find suitable capacity, compare a quote, confirm manufacturability and coordinate production, quality and delivery. Fractory addresses that chain as a managed manufacturing network rather than a factory or a generic supplier directory. The buyer uploads drawings or three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) files, selects process, material, quantity and delivery information, and can attach a PDF with tolerances and instructions. 1 2

What Fractory automates—and where it stops

For supported laser-cut and bent parts, Fractory describes manufacturability checks, design-for-manufacture feedback, indicative or approved online pricing and a displayed lead time. Its FAQ says pricing uses cutting time, material and logistics, and that partner selection considers complexity, size, material and location. There is no minimum order quantity; orders above about £2,000 and parts that fail automated checks move to a sales engineer for manual quotation. The FAQ gives about seven working days for flat laser profiling. 2

Manufacturers in the network can accept or decline work based on capability and availability, download the models and drawings, manufacture the parts and mark them ready for transport. For multi-stage work, Fractory adds planning, specialist routing, finishing, assembly or kitting, quality assurance and delivery under an account manager. 1 3 5

The boundary is commercially important. Fractory added metal welding processes including MIG/MAG, TIG, spot and robot welding, soldering and brazing, but explicitly said welding was not automated and required an engineer-led request for quotation. The current FAQ likewise routes welding, exotic materials, non-manufacturable parts and high-quantity work to manual review. An automated price should therefore be treated as an estimate or bounded offer until revision, tolerances, material certificates, capacity and terms are confirmed. 2 6

What the retained outcomes show

The strongest scale evidence is historical. TechCrunch reported in September 2021 that Fractory had worked with more than 24,000 customers and hundreds of manufacturers, producing more than 2.5 million parts. It also reported the company’s approximate job mix as 30% fully automated and 70% involving Fractory staff in quoting, manufacturing or delivery support. These company figures lack definitions, denominators and a current 2026 update; they are not a current automation benchmark. 7

Other public figures need the same care. Invest Estonia reported 400% revenue growth since February 2020, while Fractory later reported nearly €15 million turnover for 2022 and a first order above €2 million in 2023. These are provider or promotional disclosures without audited denominators, and an order value is not proof of adoption, margin or return on investment. 9 10 A 2020 Yorkshire Profiles partner interview describes expanded equipment and staffing, higher capacity and less digital-document administration, but provides no before-and-after figures and also records orders that exceeded the partner’s physical process limits. 13

An illustrative controlled pilot

For a manufacturer or distributor sourcing repeat sheet-metal assemblies, an illustrative first pilot would use representative revised CAD and PDF packages from one product family. Keep the released drawing and approved offer in the buyer’s product-lifecycle-management or enterprise-resource-planning system. Require checks for legal entity, units, revision, material, tolerance, certificates, inspection plan and delivery terms before purchase release. A human owner—not an assistant or an indicative quote—remains authoritative for the binding order.

Measure quote turnaround, manual-escalation rate, revision errors, the variance between indicative and approved prices, delivery performance and rework. Include unusual geometry, stale capacity and duplicate-order scenarios. This tests whether Fractory reduces coordination work without hiding engineering exceptions.

Now, next and the investment question

As of the retained October 2026 research, Fractory operates from an Estonia-founded, Manchester-based business with local teams in Italy and France and deliveries to other countries. Its proposed Fractory MCP connector could let an AI tool request prices and lead times, inspect open orders, retrieve history or spend, and reorder previous parts. It is waitlisted and still being designed, not a live autonomous procurement agent or public API. 4 5

That distinction is the practical lesson. Fractory is a credible option for cross-border prototypes, repeat sheet-metal work, computer numerical control machining and multi-stage sourcing when one accountable contact matters. It is not yet evidence that an agent can choose, approve and buy custom manufacturing without engineering and commercial controls. Buyers should verify retention, subcontractor access, export rights, incident handling and applicable standards before expanding beyond a measured pilot. 2 4
