Independent retailers have traditionally found products through trade shows or representatives, while emerging brands struggled to reach retail buyers. Abound addressed that problem as a New York-headquartered, two-sided wholesale marketplace founded in 2019 by Niklas de la Motte, Bill Shope and Drew Sfugaras. It brought discovery, ordering, returns, payment terms and retailer–brand connection online. 1 2 5
What Abound built—and what it did not
Retailers searched curated consumer products and placed wholesale orders online; brands supplied catalog information and gained retail placements. Categories included baby and kids, beauty, food and drink, home and living, jewelry and accessories. The offer included wholesale prices advertised up to 50% below retail, free returns and Net 60 terms for some qualified retailers. Abound earned commission on sales. 1 2 5
The company began as a community connecting representatives with retailers, then moved to direct brand-to-retailer buying before its October 2019 launch. The evidence supports catalog discovery, commercial terms, ordering and ordinary fulfillment. It does not support industrial request-for-quotation or configure-price-quote work, drawing control, materials and tolerances, capacity checks, co-design or binding quotations.
Reported growth needs careful labels
TechCrunch reported Abound’s claim that more than 180,000 products had been added since the start of 2020 and monthly sales volume had risen 20-fold. The source does not disclose the denominator, absolute sales units, baseline or causal attribution. 1
A November 2021 company release reported more than 400,000 products, more than 40,000 active retailers and year-to-date gross merchandise volume (GMV) more than four times 2020. Built In NYC independently reported those counts and quoted the chief executive saying sales had nearly tripled since Series A. These are provider-reported scale claims, not measured customer return on investment, margin improvement, retention or causal proof. 3 4
Funding provides context rather than adoption evidence. Abound announced a $22.9 million Series A in February 2021 and a $36.7 million Series B in November 2021; the later company release states official total funding of $59.6 million. The February 19 email date aligns with the Series A announcement, but is not proof of a closing date. 1 2 3
Evolution, closure and the lesson
The public record documents a model change, not a proven cause of failure. Gifts & Decorative Accessories reported that wholesale sales would stop on June 9, 2023, with a move to limited-beta Droply dropshipping. Retailers could browse selected products, add them to an online storefront, preferably through Shopify, and have brands fulfil orders directly to end customers. That avoided retailer inventory but shifted small-order fulfilment to brands. 6
An independent maker guide records the 2019–2023 chronology and says Abound transitioned to Droply in June 2023. Carro announced the acquisition of Abound and Droply in January 2024; its terms were confidential. A promotional near-$250 million 2021 valuation statement is not independently verified or current. 7 8 The former Abound domain now presents Carro Merchant Services, not the original wholesale application. 9
An illustrative test for a B2B business
This is an illustrative application, not a reported Abound deployment. A distributor or manufacturer studying a similar marketplace should first govern brand, retailer, SKU, price, wholesale terms, inventory, returns and fulfilment authority. Test duplicate products, stale prices, unit and pack-size errors, incompatible variants, permissions and whether the requester is authorised to place an order.
For custom industrial work, add capability, material and tolerance, released drawing revision, equipment and capacity, lead time and the distinction between an indicative estimate and an approved binding offer. Keep discovery separate from a sale: a found product is not a confirmed price, stock or authorised order. Measure wrong-item and stale-data rates, correction time, exception-review effort and downstream order accuracy rather than treating scale or funding as return on investment. Human owners remain authoritative for commercial terms, fulfilment commitments and consequential actions.
Abound is therefore a historical case about marketplace data and channel workflow—not a live 2026 wholesale, artificial-intelligence discovery or industrial RFQ product. No named retailer or brand has a publicly disclosed, independently measured before/after result attributable to Abound, and no verified current pricing, application programming interface or repository remains available.
