A manufacturer may have variable parts, incomplete computer-aided design (CAD) drawings or a logistics yard that does not behave like its map. The difficult question is not whether a robot can move. It is whether sensing, calibration, geometry, path planning, controller interfaces and operator review can be assembled safely for the particular process. ROS-Industrial is relevant to that integration problem, but it is not an ERP, quoting system or turnkey production cell.
An open foundation for custom work
ROS-Industrial extends the Robot Operating System (ROS) to industrial hardware, tools and applications. Its Consortium mission covers roadmap work, industrial code quality and testing, training and technical support; the project describes itself as a ROS and ROS 2 ecosystem resource rather than a replacement for ROS. 1 2
The practical flow is scan or sense, calibrate, reconstruct and segment geometry, localise the part, generate tool paths, check reachability and collisions, then plan and execute through an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) controller with operator or process review. Scan-N-Plan is aimed at variable part mixes, absent CAD, deformable parts, part variation and flexible or no-fixturing situations. That can make as-found geometry useful when drawings are incomplete. It does not become authoritative for drawing revisions, materials, tolerances, certification, plant capacity, lead time or price. Those decisions belong in governed engineering, production and commercial systems. 3
SwRI describes a concrete adaptive sanding workflow involving calibration, point-cloud and mesh processing, path generation, process monitoring, force and compliance control, and programmable logic controller or controller interfaces. Its aircraft-propeller case used a force-controlled head, a three-dimensional and colour camera, edge and area paths, contact-area force adjustment and machine-learning completion detection. This is evidence of customer-specific engineering, not proof of universal autonomous production. ROS-Industrial describes broader potential in painting, finishing, deburring and inspection; blending and sanding were still under development in the cited overview while paint had prior deployment. 3 4
What the named cases established
A Spirit AeroSystems, Southwest Research Institute and Wichita State University collaborative sanding effort used ROS 2, Gazebo simulation, a graphical interface, reachability analysis and a UR10e robot. The project reported Technology Readiness Level 6 testing, but also found degraded force near a robot singularity and unreliable communication across a ROS 2-to-ROS 1 bridge. The public repository is based on ROS 2 Eloquent, requires additional dependencies and separates hardware operation into ROS 1 driver and bridge steps. It is a useful reference implementation, not a supported turnkey cell. 5 6
In logistics, a StreetScooter account describes ROS modules adapted for Follow Me Delivery and yard operations. The Asterix/AMPS system ran at DHL’s Cologne Eifeltor parcel centre in 2019. Mapped global-navigation-satellite-system positions were insufficient for dock approach, so active detection was required. After three months of daily operation, the authors report positive feedback from multiple DHL test drivers and a later successful test at another DHL site. The account is qualitative and participant-reported: it gives no control, throughput, availability, cost or revenue comparison. 7
An A3/Automate industry article describes BMW Smart Transport Robots carrying roll containers of up to 1 tonne per robot, a capability or development claim associated with work from 2015 and reported in 2019. It gives no fleet, uptime, cycle-time, labour or financial denominator. 8 Similarly, a stated requirement for logistics localisation was an error margin smaller than 3 cm; the retained evidence does not report that requirement as an achieved accuracy KPI. 7
The operating lesson: capability is not authority
ROS-Industrial has a real open-source ecosystem, but support and lifecycle vary by repository. industrial_core states that support is community-based and best effort, with no direct OEM or Consortium support, and documents older ROS Kinetic and Melodic binaries. Noether is public, non-archived and Apache-2.0, with activity recorded through 26 October 2026; other repositories have heterogeneous or unclear licence metadata. A repository being public does not create an uptime commitment, safety certification, warranty or legal permission to reuse every dependency. 2 9 10
For an illustrative high-mix manufacturer, start with one bounded finishing or inspection process. Version scans, meshes, drawings and generated paths with calibration, frame and timestamp provenance. Record robot, controller, tool, camera, payload, force limits, firmware, ROS distribution and driver capability. Retain collision, reachability and force checks, operator overrides and recovery states. Keep material, tolerance, finish, certificates, price and delivery in their authoritative systems. Test nominal and as-found parts, reflective or occluded surfaces, singularities and bridge failures separately.
The useful acceptance measures are process-specific: path validity, force and surface quality, cycle time, recovery rate, safe intervention and maintenance effort. For logistics, retain map and site versions, dock or container identity, sensor provenance, capacity and safety-zone state. ROS-Industrial can reduce integration effort; the retained evidence does not show independently audited project-wide throughput, overall equipment effectiveness, uptime, scrap, payback, revenue, labour or safety results. The commercially sound posture is an open technical foundation plus an accountable integrator and governed validation.
