Vention: connect machine configuration to a governed production handoff

Vention shows how a modular automation platform can connect 3D machine design, bill of materials, ordering and programming. Its reported customer outcomes are promising, but production use still depends on independent safety, compatibility and cycle-time validation.

A custom automation project often breaks into disconnected steps: an engineer designs a cell, purchasing rebuilds the parts list, software is configured separately and a safety owner must still determine whether the result can run in the factory. Vention’s proposition is to connect those steps for modular equipment, while extending the same platform toward robotic programming and Physical AI.

From configuration to an orderable machine

Vention, founded in Montreal in 2016, provides MachineBuilder, modular hardware, MachineMotion controllers and MachineLogic programming. Its current design workflow describes more than 3,000 plug-and-play components, AI part recommendations, connector autocomplete and a design checker. Teams can import plans, place a design in a factory context, check interference and footprint, branch revisions and control access. The resulting bill of materials, pricing and order path are tied to the 3D design, with delivery tracking and generated assembly instructions described by the provider. 1 2

That is more than a visual configurator: it is a configure-to-order workflow. Its strongest fit is a standardized or semi-custom machine that can be built from known Vention components. It is not evidence that every imported drawing, tolerance stack, process recipe, price or external system record is current or production-ready.

The engineering boundary remains real

MachineBuilder supports common computer-aided-design imports, including SolidWorks, CATIA, PTC Creo and Inventor, and can export STEP files. MachineMotion can be programmed through a robot plug-in, code-free MachineLogic or Python. The retained technical evidence also records important limits: MachineLogic cannot currently control multiple controllers in one application, and the older Python API documentation is marked no longer maintained. 3 11

Before release, a customer still needs to check robot and gripper compatibility, payload, guarding, electrical standards, controller and firmware versions, external programmable-logic-controller integration, cycle time and maintenance ownership. Vention’s safety material places site risk assessment with the customer. The seventh axis is not collaborative, and the documented stopAllMotion function is not a safety-rated emergency stop. AI path planning or “no operator intervention” language cannot replace safety-rated circuits, lockout procedures and production acceptance tests. 3 11 12

What the reported outcomes say—and do not say

Vention’s customer stories report a 25% productivity increase, one operator per shift reallocated, a 15-week speed-to-market and a projected 20-month return on investment for Moin Robotics’ labeling automation. For 3D Infotech’s Universal Metrology Automation cell, the provider reports 70% less inspection time and 300% more capacity. An unnamed high-volume manufacturer is reported to have achieved 1,300 continuous cycles per shift and a 50% operational-cost reduction using Rapid Operator AI. These are provider-authored figures; baselines, observation periods, causal methods and independent verification are not fully disclosed, and the Moin return is explicitly projected rather than realised. 8

BetaKit provides a more independent scale context, reporting approximately 330 employees, more than 4,000 factories, named users including Boeing, L’Oréal and Lockheed Martin, and a late-December 2025 statement of C$100 million annual run rate. Those figures support scale and customer use as reported; they do not establish Vention-specific return on investment for those companies. 7

Physical AI needs a parts-specific pilot

Rapid Operator AI applies stereo three-dimensional vision, GRIIP adaptive intelligence and MachineMotion AI to deep-bin picking. Vention describes mixed-SKU and new-part handling without part-specific training, deployment in hours and new parts in minutes. The public workflow asks prospects to submit parts and process details for evaluation, so this is an application-specific assessment rather than proof of a universal self-serve agent. 6 10

For an illustrative manufacturer, start with a representative mixed-part pilot. Freeze the source parts, bin presentation, gripper, lighting and revisioned machine bill of materials. Compare first-pick success, cycle time, exception rate, recovery behaviour and human review hours against a documented baseline. A design checker can accelerate preparation; it cannot approve the safety case or a binding commercial release.

Commercial controls before expansion

Public pricing is incomplete. The FAQ discloses a one-time US$550 EtherNet/IP price per machine without MachineApp/MachineLogic, or US$950 for palletizers with MachineApp; an external programmable-logic-controller subscription may be separate, and the component warranty is 12 months. End-to-end machine, AI-cell, integration, support, shipping and recurring software costs are not published. 3

A buyer should require immutable revisions, compatibility and unit checks, quote approval, permissions, digital-twin testing, manual release, independent risk assessment and production acceptance. Vention’s Developer Toolkit adds Python, React, storage that can generate a validated and auditable REST API, a software-development kit, command-line/cloud synchronization and digital-twin simulation. The retained record does not establish an open-source licence or self-hosting right, so licensing must be confirmed before treating it as anything other than platform-accessible developer tooling. 9
