A custom metal job can fail before anyone reaches a quote. The drawing may be obsolete, the robot may not reach the required pose, or available equipment may differ from the assumed process. ARENA2036 in Stuttgart is useful at this boundary: it is a research campus and German AI-MATTERS test-and-experimentation facility, not a supplier marketplace, configure-price-quote system or order-management vendor. The programme launched in January 2023 and is expected to run through December 2027. 1 2
What the experiments established
The strongest named 2026 case is RoboDK and ARENA2036’s robotic-inspection validation. They used simulation and offline programming to test inspection paths on real industrial robots, assess simulation-to-reality transfer on a dynamic shop floor and reconfigure workflows for different inspection scenarios. The published account reports reduced programming and commissioning time, reliable transfer, high inspection accuracy and flexible reconfiguration, but gives no cycle-time baseline, test-set denominator, tolerance, defect class, measured accuracy or production/revenue result. These are project-reported qualitative outcomes, not an independently measured factory KPI. 7
A partner case adds implementation detail. An Intelligent Sorting Framework combined a KUKA KR360, FARO LeapST 3D scanner, VGC10 vacuum gripper and dual quick changer. RoboDK provided robot simulation, simulated camera snapshots, Python-based dynamic path selection, collision and reachability checks, and offline development. OpenCV ORB matched scanned features to reference geometries for classification and sorting; examples included gearboxes, battery casings and dome-shaped components. The case discloses no customer acceptance test, test-set size, error denominator, scrap reduction or realised production benefit. 8
A second 2026 experiment paired BOW, now OLO, with ARENA2036 to develop and validate an artificial-intelligence driver for KUKA arms on real industrial hardware. The public result is feasibility: the driver was developed, flexibility and adaptability were demonstrated, and AI control concepts were validated. No run count, safety denominator, cycle-time baseline, production order or buyer handoff is reported. The proposed ROS2 expansion is a future direction, not a current commercial outcome. 6
The twin is a governed model, not an offer
ARENA2036 describes a functional building digital twin connected through standardised connectors to sensors, motion detection, energy monitoring and access control. Laser scanning creates a point cloud; a structured model is exported in USD and transferred to NVIDIA Omniverse, where metadata, spaces and interactive elements are added. The twin supports robot reinforcement learning, sensor simulation, room planning, test coordination, virtual commissioning and process experiments. Public material mentions regulated access and open formats, but does not publish an API schema, payload example, identity model, version policy or retention terms. 3
Its SDM4FZI work proposes product, process and production-system twins enriched across the lifecycle. Simulation-based optimisation can test production scenarios before an operation is imported into a real system, while integrated engineering connects planning, cross-company information, approval, service and maintenance. Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and OPC UA are named technologies. This is an architectural direction for carrying drawings, equipment capability and current state; it is not evidence that an incoming RFQ automatically becomes a manufacturable offer. 4
A separate AI-MATTERS Italy case describes PDF, Word and Excel RFQs being extracted, normalised to a corporate taxonomy and handed through middleware and application programming interfaces to Jama Connect requirements management and product-lifecycle-management archiving. That workflow belongs to MADE4.0, Solution Hub and Erre Quadro; it is not attributed to ARENA2036 and reports no numeric accuracy or time baseline. 9
An illustrative validation route
Consider a custom enclosure manufacturer. This is an illustrative application, not a reported ARENA2036 deployment. Start with the released drawing and revision, permissions, units, material grade, tolerances, compatibility constraints and quantity. Represent robot reachability, equipment capability, current capacity, process state and certification separately from the product record. Use the twin and deterministic geometry, collision, metrology and rule checks to test feasibility; use bounded AI for perception or classification. An engineer and quality owner remain authoritative for release, safety and any buyer-facing offer.
Measure baseline cycle time, inspection precision and recall, false rejects, commissioning hours, traceability and rework. Include stale revisions, mixed units, difficult geometries and unavailable equipment. A connected twin can improve a validation decision, but it does not supply price, currency, tax, Incoterms, lead time, export-control status, certification or authority to contract. Public evidence shows no ARENA2036 RFQ receipt, supplier selection, quote approval, order, logistics, invoice or quantified production deployment. 1 3 5
Sources and next reading
The public pages are read-only descriptions or case narratives; they do not expose a live twin, public API, full implementation repository or authenticated customer transaction workflow. RoboDK is commercial, and the retained evidence does not publish complete implementation details or per-project pricing.
