A manufacturer may have a robot, a process problem and a promising open-source component without having a production-ready cell. The difficult work is connecting the right driver, controller, robot description, tooling, safety functions and process constraints, then proving the complete system works. ROS-Industrial is relevant to that gap, but the retained evidence does not describe a single vendor quoting, commissioning or warranting the finished cell.
A consortium rather than a product vendor
ROS-Industrial extends the Robot Operating System (ROS and ROS 2) toward manufacturing automation. SwRI leads the Americas, Fraunhofer IPA leads Europe, and A*STAR/ARTC leads Asia-Pacific. Members bring recurring capability gaps, propose or join Focused Technical Projects, share development costs and contribute to a common roadmap. The resulting code, reports, training and demonstrations form a coordination and knowledge layer; an original equipment manufacturer, integrator or site team still integrates, validates, commissions and supports the application. 1 2 3 4
This model can reduce duplicated research and improve access to expertise. It is not evidence that ROS-Industrial handles quotation, pricing, ordering, logistics, invoicing or maintenance. The Europe network describes member access to project data, live technical support, training and governance, but the public record does not provide a general membership fee schedule, response-time agreement or universal warranty. 1 3
What the evidence says about industrial use
Fraunhofer reports that several hundred industrial robots using ROS were in industrial use across its developments, including automated guided vehicles moving vehicle bodies between automotive assembly stations since 2016 and work on a global automotive supplier’s production line. It also reports 90 companies in the worldwide initiative. These are institutional, historical statements—not a controlled ROS-Industrial census, current membership count or measured return on investment. Exact robot denominators, customer names, baselines, throughput and overall equipment effectiveness are not supplied. 13
The February 2026 recap of the November 2025 Europe conference records concerns around drivers, real-time control, maintainability, fieldbuses, safety and documentation. This shows an active engineering agenda, not a consortium-wide outcome study. No retained source establishes improvement in throughput, scrap, deployment time, support response, quote conversion, revenue or ROI. 6 7
Code quality is not system acceptance
The ROS-Industrial FAQ describes code review and automatic quality metrics for package maturity. Tesseract, a representative public repository, documents Linux and Windows continuous integration, compiler and clang-tidy checks, CodeCov, CTest tests, optional coverage and benchmarks, with warnings treated as errors in continuous integration. That is useful repository-level process evidence, not proof of hardware compatibility, real-time determinism, cybersecurity, electromagnetic compatibility, functional safety or production acceptance. 8 9
The FAQ places ROS-I normally at the high-level controller layer: low-level servo feedback and safety behaviour such as emergency stops generally remain with the original equipment manufacturer and suitable hardware interfaces. Buyers must check the exact repository, release, dependencies, maintainer activity and hardware interface. The ROS-Industrial Attic identifies end-of-life repositories whose issues are not actively monitored; an open issue tracker is not a support commitment. 2 8 10
Training helps, but responsibility stays local
The 14–16 April 2026 Europe training was a three-day, hands-on course covering ROS 2, behaviour trees, navigation, mobile robots and manipulators. Up to two Full-member attendees, one Associate-member attendee and one Research-member attendee could attend free; other seats were listed at €2,000 per attendee. This establishes a training offer, not certification, deployment success or a support SLA. 11 12
Fraunhofer also describes consulting and training on licensing, liability and customer support, plus prototype implementations, proofs of concept, industrial hardware components and simulation models. That demonstrates an integration-adjacent service-provider role, distinct from the consortium assuming liability for a customer’s production system. 13 14
An illustrative manufacturer test
For an illustrative custom automation project, use ROS-Industrial to discover candidate drivers, planning components, simulations and expert support—not to approve a cell automatically. Preserve the released drawing or process revision, robot/controller firmware, exact ROS distribution and commit, URDF or scene version, tool and fixture identity, units, coordinate frames, material and tolerance constraints, and approval history. Keep price, capacity, lead time, taxes, delivery terms, certification and warranty in authoritative integrator, OEM or procurement systems.
Test reachable and unreachable trajectories, stale revisions, mismatched frames, unsupported drivers and changed hardware. Measure retrieval, integration defects, review time and hardware validation separately from production output. Engineering and safety owners decide cell acceptance; commercial owners decide scope, price and contractual authority. Open-source code and artificial intelligence assistance can improve discovery, but neither substitutes for that decision chain.
