Avoca: service-call coverage is not industrial quoting authority

Avoca’s U.S. service-business cases show how an AI front office can answer demand, recover estimates and use live operational data. They also show why booking assistance must remain bounded by current prices, capacity and human approval.

A missed call for a service business is often a lost job, not merely a delayed message. The practical question is whether an assistant can identify the customer, use current operational information, book work within policy and hand exceptions to a person without making the caller repeat the discovery process.

What Avoca does

Avoca is a New York City-headquartered service-business AI company, founded in 2022 and listed by Y Combinator as active. Its public product is organised around Convert, Nurture and Coach: answering voice, text, email and chat enquiries; booking work; re-engaging past customers and unsold estimates; and reviewing calls for manager coaching. Public customer evidence is concentrated in U.S. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fuel and related service businesses. 1 2 3

The inbound workflow includes caller-history lookup, qualification, emergency routing, booking and customer-record creation. Avoca’s Human-in-the-Loop design is intended to pass a human customer-service representative the caller’s identity, need, equipment and tone. The customer still defines services, fees, hours, capacity, permissions and escalation rules. This is a governed front office, not an autonomous authority for every exception. 3

Shipley Energy illustrates the pattern: the agent identifies an account from caller ID, calls a backend application programming interface with the address, retrieves live geographic fuel pricing, calculates the applicable amount and hands the interaction to the team. That supports conversational intake connected to a source-of-truth system; it does not show independent credit approval, a guaranteed binding quote or unconfigured dispatch. 6

What the named cases reported

The strongest disclosed outcomes are provider-published case studies, so they are concrete but not independent validation. Brody Pennell, a Los Angeles HVAC company with more than 200 employees, deployed Avoca in 2025 across inbound response, coaching, web and chat scheduling, speed-to-lead and outbound campaigns. The case reports booking rate rising from approximately 65–70% to 90%, Facebook/Meta lead conversion from about 15% to 25%, and manual call review falling by at least three hours per day. It also describes 1,200–1,300 normal-day calls and two-to-three-times that volume during heat waves. No audited denominator, control group, revenue increment or causal analysis is published. 4

Genz-Ryan’s outbound case reports 115 AI-booked jobs in the first month. An initial test targeted 70 customers; a later furnace-tune-up message reached roughly 400–450 customers in one day. For unsold estimates over the prior two weeks, Avoca reports a 36% response rate and 24% booking rate, alongside 40 active campaigns. Audience previews and automatic stops when a job is booked elsewhere or an estimate closes are useful controls, but the figures have no independently verified denominator or counterfactual. 5

Shipley Energy reports peak holds falling from 20–30 minutes to zero, approximately twice as many calls answered, one-third of inbound calls handled end to end by the agent, 60% customer choice of the bot when offered, and 39 simultaneous instances during a cold winter. These are operational comparisons, not proof that every price was correct or that Avoca caused the whole result. A pilot should reconcile transcripts, API responses, prices, bookings, cancellations and complaints. 6

The boundary for industrial use

Fortune reports that the founders moved from restaurant missed-call handling to home services after Rescue Air showed that a missed HVAC call could represent a $30,000–$40,000 installation rather than a $30–$40 restaurant order. Avoca later announced more than $125 million raised across Seed, Series A and Series B at a $1 billion valuation, with expansion planned toward roofing, restoration, automotive, moving, junk removal and property management. These are reported expansion claims, not proof of equal maturity in each sector. 7 8 9

For an industrial distributor or service chain, an illustrative first test would be missed-call recovery and booking for one named service family. Keep the enterprise resource planning, field-service or customer-relationship system authoritative for identity, equipment, service definitions, prices, technician skills, capacity and permissions. Require hard stops for unknown equipment, safety risk, conflicting records, unavailable parts, unusual discounts and binding quotes. Compare the agent with the existing answering service using the same period and denominator, and audit duplicate bookings, stale data and escalation quality.

Avoca is not publicly evidenced as a full industrial request-for-quote or configure-price-quote system for drawings, revisions, tolerances, material certificates, tooling, capacity reservation or bespoke engineering. Public pricing is undisclosed and there is no public self-serve trial. A third-party review estimates roughly $1,000–$3,500 per month, possibly tied to conversation minutes; this is not Avoca-published pricing. Obtain written terms for setup, integration, included minutes, overage, campaign volume, retention, support and peak-season behaviour. 10
